FYI: Storage Bin Recall

I’ve seen bins like this in friends’ homes, so I want to spread the word:

CPSC has received one report of a death involving an 8-month-old boy who was asphyxiated after he pulled on the storage rack and it fell over on him. The top rail landed on the infant’s neck. No other incidents have been reported.

The storage rack is wooden with three levels and nine removable canvas totes. There are wooden handles on each side of the rack. The boy’s storage rack has natural color wood with red, yellow, green, and navy canvas totes. The girl’s storage rack has white colored wood with pink, yellow, lime, and purple canvas totes.

If you’ve got one of these, you should immediately stop children from using it and contact Jetmax International at (800) 689-2168 to receive a free repair kit that adds stability to the base.

How to stay up-to-date on toy recalls

As we’re getting ready to move, we’ve gotten to the point where we’re packing up most of the kids’ toys. That got us wondering: what with all of the recalls that have been issued lately because of lead paint and all (why on earth isn’t China under a trade embargo yet?), are any of the toys in our house unsafe? I mean, Joshua seems like he’s half-puppy; he’s always chewing on something.

So while looking around, I got a bit overwhelmed by the huge lists of recalls. Thankfully, it looks like we’re okay, but I was wondering if there might be an easier way to keep track of new notices.

Well, there is. Just plug the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s child products RSS Feed into your feed reader of choice (Google Reader, Feedblitz, Sage, etc.) and you’ll get updates as other items are recalled! (The CPSC provides a number of other recall feeds, too.)

I hope you find that as helpful as I do. :)

My Brother, the 80s Child

Last Friday, my bro Jordan (aka “CYNOR”) wrote the first of a series of articles on his favorite stuff from the 80s and early 90s… and it seems to be a hit with the RetroJunk crowd. :)

I was born in July of 1984 in Carroll County, Maryland. My older brother was two at the time, so I was set with a playmate from the get-go. My first memory is from my third birthday party. We had pizza (my first recollection of the tasty baked goodness), and I got my very first action figures: John Rambo and Colonel Trautman from the RAMBO movies. If that wasn’t cool enough, the best was still to come: My very own Big Wheel tricycle! I remember riding it right out the front door. I didn’t care about the porch steps; this was my new ride, and I was pimpin’!

For the record, the figures were actually based on the RAMBO cartoon that was on the air at the time. But if you can handle minor errors like that, give this article a read. He covers Teddy Ruxpin, Record Breakers, Gerbert, Pop-Qwiz Popcorn and much, much more! :)
