The Emergent Church’s Problem 0

“The problem with the emergent church (in addition to some of those already described) is that they tend to identify humility with uncertainty and dogmatism with pride. Consequently, they embrace story, not because it is the best vehicle for restoring robust certainty to the Church, but rather as a means of getting Christians to knock it off with that off-putting certainty business.” — Douglas Wilson, One Other Thing

Okay, hold it!

When did this happen?

Weird… for the first time ever, I can download my own church’s sermons on MP3!

Finding Old Friends: of churches, youth groups, blogrolls and such 0

A few years back, Nicole and I were members of Cornerstone Church of Knoxville. It’s been a while, and we’ve kinda lost touch with most of the folks there… but, for some reason (perhaps the Girl Talk blog?) a number of the members there have started blogs.

Like my earlier post listing former cronies from Littlestown Chapel’s high school ministry, Actual Reality, Nicole has started a list at her “Little Christian Musings” blog, titled Cornerstone Bloggers. I’ve got everyone’s RSS feeds set up in Thunderbird, so I won’t miss a thing.

Unless, of course, someone posts something with Microsoft Office’s “<o:p>” tags embedded in it. Because of that, I’ve got to manually check Joanna’s blog, The Shadow Proves the Sunshine, which just isn’t right. Yet another reason to despise M$.

Speaking of which, our home PC runs Windows ME… and I’ve been trying to find a Linux alternative that Nicole would be happy with. I’ve downloaded Ubuntu and I’ll see if she likes it. The main problem is that our current ISP only offers access for Windows machines. (Guess I’ll have to finally ditch this Compuserve-branded crap and get a real ISP… oh darn.) =|

In other news, I’m thinking of taking Jakob Neilsen’s recent advice to bloggers and compiling a sidebar list of “must-read” entries. The one area where I prefer LiveJournal to Blogger is that LJ’s archives are entry-based: it’s always “previous 20 entries” rather than “August 2005.” I think I’ll add “Actual Reality: Where are they now?,” if only to make it easier for me to access. (I’ve found a couple more of ‘em on Xanga, for instance, but haven’t had the time to add them to the list.)

Land of Elyon 1: The Dark Hills Divide

Read this book.

If you can afford to, buy it. If you can’t, root through every library in your state until you can get your hands on a copy.

Seriously, folks. If the sequels hold up, this series is like Harry Potter meets The Chronicles of Narnia. Or even just The Chronicles of Narnia set in 16th-century England. I dunno, it’s just good.

You can read all sorts of reviews, so I won’t repeat their efforts. The best I can do (without ruining the best parts) is to highly recommend it!
